Helpful Resource to Get You Started

Research Paper Requirements

  • Analysis of Latin American or Pre-Columbian artwork.
  • Be specific with topic you choose--find a piece of art that represents your topic of interest, and use comparisons tied to your thesis.
  • Need a thesis statement--What stance are you taking on the topic?

  • Must have 4 or more sources that are either books, academic journal articles, or reputable websites.
  • Websites may not be online encyclopedias, wikis, or art blogs.
  • May use MLA or Chicago Style formatting for paper and source citations.  

5 Essay Prompts

  1. Mexican muralism became a platform for imagery that supported indigeneity, the working class, and revolutionary ideas. This came in many forms from many artists throughout Latin America. Choose one or two art works and describe how they supported revolutionary ideas and/or a goal of social change in Latin America.  
  2. Frida Kahlo had the ability to communicate deeply personal emotions and experiences through her art. Choose no more than three works that you can use to describe how Frida used her art to express her life, experiences, and realities in unique ways.     
  3. Latin American abstraction ranged in style, form, and location in the 20th century. Choose one of the unique Latin American abstract styles and discuss the artists goals, intentions, and/or motivations for their work. 
  4. Choose an artwork to discuss from one of the many Pre-Columbian cultures making work in what we describe as Latin America. This could be Aztec, Mayan, Olmec, Inca or another culture from the Americas.
  5. Chicano Art blossomed in the civil rights era of the 1960’s and 70’s. How did Chicana/o/x artists use art to describe themselves, their community, and their Mexican heritage through art?
