Searching the Internet
In this lesson we’ll learn how to use Google to get better, more academic search results. If you prefer using another search engine (Bing, Yahoo), be aware that some of the search features discussed may not work in those search engines.
Search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Ask, and Bing do essentially the same thing: they electronically scan web pages and capture keywords. When you enter a word or phrase in the search box of a search engine, the words are matched against the captured words and websites are retrieved. Search engines also rank the retrieved results so that the websites most relevant to (or most closely related to) your search appear first in the results.
Google offers tips for improving your Internet searching and very powerful tools for manipulating your search results. On the next tabs we'll review some search tips and brief descriptions of how to use Google’s search manipulation tools to improve your searching.
