A CHALLENGE to a book is an attempt to remove or restrict that book, based upon the objections of a person or group (such as parents, a school board, or a teacher).
A BAN occurs when the book is successfully challenged and so the book is removed.
The book is RETAINED when the library or school rejects the challenge.
