Using eBooks is a great way to supplement your OER or commercial textbook. At the Bakersfield College Library, there are several eBook databases in which you can look for content.
Each tab of this guide features a database that contains eBooks. Each tab includes the link to a database that contains eBooks, along with videos that share how to find content and where to find the persistent links to share with your students.
The best way to share eBook content with your students in Canvas is by using a persistent link, sometimes called a permalink.
With a persistent link, your students will be directed to log in with their BC logins and then they will be taken directly to the content. It is never appropriate to download PDFs and attach them as files in your Canvas shell. While copy/download features are available in some eBook databases, these tools are meant to be used by individual users. Not using the persistent link could violate both copyright laws and vendor contracts.
Besides copyright and licensing agreements, the other reason to use persistent links is accessibility. Some databases have features that can read the content to students. Screen readers can also read HTML.
