Accessibility and Academic Success: A Guide for Neurodivergent and Disabled Students: BC Resources

The Student Success Lab supports Bakersfield College’s mission by offering developmental courses that help students transition to college-level coursework. They are committed to recognizing and addressing the diverse needs of transitional students, fostering their personal, social, and intellectual growth. They believe in a holistic approach to learning, recognize students’ unique talents and backgrounds, aim to create a supportive, student-centered environment that promotes academic success, and develop activities and services to prepare students for college-level courses.

These one-hour workshops can help you develop college- level research skills. Workshop topics include: avoiding plagiarism, evaluating articles, evaluating news sources, finding books and ebooks, finding scholarly journal articles, introduction to evaluating sources, research strategies, and sources 101.

Disabled Student Programs & Services (DSPS) at Bakersfield College helps ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to educational opportunities. DSPS provides reasonable accommodations for students with documented physical, mental health, or learning disabilities enrolled at the college.

If you have a documented disability, you can go to DSPS for test-taking assistance, special equipment, mobility assistance, note-taking, assistive computer technology, special classes, counseling, sign language interpreters, written materials in an alternate format, learning disability assessment, and more.

The Student Health and Wellness Center (SHWC) is available to all enrolled students, both on the main campus and through virtual services. SHWC offers affordable basic medical care and mental health support. Appointments with Health Services Clinicians or mental health professionals are conducted privately and confidentially, either in-person or via Zoom. Please note that some appointments are available in-person only.

Bakersfield College's Tutoring Centers offer FREE in-person and online tutoring to all enrolled students. Our CRLA-certified peer tutors, recommended by faculty, assist with a wide range of subjects, academic skills, course content, assignments, and writing (at any stage). Services are available through drop-in or by scheduling an appointment in advance.

The Bakersfield College Writing Center offers one-on-one appointments with professional Writing Consultants to all BC registered students. Students can schedule 30-minute sessions, or 60-minute sessions if they are registered with DSPS or EOPS.

The Math Tutoring Center offers FREE drop in tutoring at BC main campus in General Science building Room 8, as well as zoom tutoring if you can’t come in physically. If you need a refresher, the Math Tutoring Center also offers self-paced, non-credit, online courses that you can enroll in for free.
