Library Research Skills: Finding Print Books and Ebooks: Using eBooks

How do I use eBooks?

Now that you've found an ebook, how do you navigate it efficiently, and what features are there?

There are five basic ways to navigate an eBook:

1.  The arrows around the box at the bottom of the screen allow you to "turn pages."  This isn't recommended for searching the book, but is fine for turning pages while reading.

2.  You can scroll down the pages to either scan or read page by page using the scroll bar at the right of the screen.  The book is like one very long PDF.  Again, this isn't the best way to search through the book.

3.  The Table of Contents in the left margin allows you to jump to a specific chapter by clicking on the chapter name.

4.  Also in the Table of Contents, you can use the Index link (usually near the bottom of the Table of Contents) to search the book entries and pages on which they are found.  You can then type in the page number indicated in the Index into the box with the arrows at the bottom of the page, hit the enter key, and you'll be taken to that page.

5.  In the top left corner there is a tab for "Search within."  Click on it, and type in the search box a keyword for the topic you are researching.  The search results will show you how many pages contain your search term in each chapter.  Click on "Relevancy" to see your search results in context, and to go directly to that page.  This is the recommended method of navigation because you can quickly move through the book seeing just the pages relevant to your research.

There are also tools available to you while navigating the ebook, found above the book, and you can click on the 3 dots to see all of the tools.  Email, print, and save all do basically the same thing: create a PDF of the pages you want to keep. You can then email, print, or download the PDF of those particular pages. If you copy and paste the permalink into a Word or Google doc, clicking the link will always return you directly to that item in the database. If you want to be taken to the front cover of the book, click the permalink on that page.  If you'd rather be taken to a particular page in the book, click the permalink option on that particular page.

Look in the left margin to see what the publisher's permissions are regarding how many pages you may save, print, or email, as well as how many downloads and copy/pastes you can do.
