Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Program Guide : Research Help

Research: Using the PICO Model

Before you begin your research, it is important to have a well-built question. One way to do this is to use the PICO model. PICO stands for patient/population, intervention, comparison, and outcomes. Watch the video below to see how using PICO ensures you are formulating the correct research question to find appropriate “peer-reviewed” articles.  This will enable you to apply your research to physical therapist assistant interventions for contemporary practice.

Peer-Review

Peer-reviewed journals, sometimes referred to as“refereed” journals, are among the most respected sources of academic information.   Prior to becoming published, “peer-reviewed” scholarly works, research or ideas must be reviewed by other experts in the same field (peers) and pass the scrutiny of these experts prior to being published in academic journals.  This process is necessary to ensure academic scientific quality of articles and journals.  Watch the video below to ensure you are choosing only “peer-reviewed” articles for your assignments.

Levels of Evidence Explained

This tutorial will explain levels of evidence, based on research study design, so that you can find the best evidence for your practice using a database. It was developed by the Physiotherapy Association of British Columbia for PABC members and for members of the Ontario Physiotherapy Association.
