Outside of BC libraryWe have a ton of resources here at the Grace Van Dyke Bird Library that can assist you during your time as a Bakersfield College student. Click through the items on this page to learn about a few of them or visit the Bakersfield College Library homepage. Don't forget- if you ever have any questions, just use the library "AskUs" feature on that same site. This will put you in direct contact with a librarian during business hours.

  • Search the Internet- has links to a ton of great informational sites verified as helpful and reliable by librarians. Simply click the link, find your topic, and see what websites you can use.
  • Workshops & Tutorials- Sign up for a one-time free workshops regarding a multitude of topics, such as "Strategies for Effective Research" or "Evaluating Internet Sources", all taught by your local librarians. There are also asynchronous video tutorials to walk you through how to research and/or use databases
  • LibGuides- A great resource for specific assignments and courses. Click the link, try finding your class (not all are on there), and click the libguide for a detailed walkthrough of your coursework or assignment. 
  • "Cite it Right"- Find out how to cite in MLA, APA, Chicago AAA, and ASA. This page will walk you through examples for each of the formats and there are links provided to more detailed samples of citations.

 

 

Zoom Class Area

Need a quiet place to Zoom into class? Come to the new Zoom Room in the Computer Commons on the 1st floor of the library (northeast corner)! Space is first come, first served

Study Rooms

Two or more people can check out a study room for a few hours with their ID card. Study rooms are located on the top floor but to reserve a study room. go to circulation desk in library lobby.

Checking Out Books

You can check out 20 books at a time for period of 3 weeks. The books can be renewed up to 2 times if no one else has requested the texts. Books can be renewed on online account (Click into OneSearch on the library homepage and click "sign in" in the top right hand corner, click on your name to see the drop down menu, click on "My Loans" and renew on the next screen.) There are no late fees, however you will have to reimburse a lost book. Books can be checked out at circulation desk in lobby.

Checking out Textbooks

Textbooks cannot be found in the general collection (stacks of books upstairs)- they are only in the "Reserve Collection". If your professor has book a textbook on reserve, you may check it out for two hours at a time. If no one else has requested it, you may check it out for another two hours. Reserve textbooks can be checked out from the circulation desk in library lobby.

Printing

Printing pages cost $.10 a page and can only be done from a school computer. Either the computers in the Computer Commons or on the top floor of the library will work. Ask reference librarian to walk you through how to use print management the first time you try to print. A credit or debit card is required to put money on school account for printing

Copying

Copying pages is $.10 a page and can only be done with cash from copiers on second floor of library
